The House of Arden
E. Nesbit
“They wanted the treasure, and they—Elfrida especially—wanted adventures. Well, now they had got an adventure, both of them. There was no knowing how it would turn out either, and that, after all, is the essence of adventures.”
According to legend, the missing treasure of the ruined Arden Castle can only be found if the Lord of Arden says an ancient spell on Arden Knoll before his tenth birthday. So when Edred Arden unexpectedly inherits the title on the very day before he turns ten, he and his sister Elfrida say the spell and summon the magical Mouldiwarp, a talking white mole who serves as the guardian of the Arden family. With the Mouldiwarp’s magic, the siblings travel back in time to the days of highwaymen, smugglers, and conspirators to try to find out what happened to the treasure before it disappeared. But the past can be a very dangerous place, and soon Edred and Elfrida are in over their heads—and even risk losing them altogether—in their quest to restore the lost fortune of the House of Arden!
