Mother Carey's Chickens
Kate Douglas Wiggin

“What we want as a family is to keep well and strong and good, in body and mind and soul; to conquer our weaknesses, to train our gifts, and to harness our powers to some wished-for end, and then pull, with all our might.”

Suddenly faced with a drastic reduction in income, the Carey family flits from fashionable Boston to the Maine countryside to start life afresh in the charming yellow house they fell in love with on their last vacation. Life in the village of Beulah isn’t all bucolic, though, as the Carey children must trade servants and fine schooling for domestic duties and summer jobs. Making things even more difficult is their snobbish cousin Julia, who reluctantly joins the Careys when her father falls seriously ill. But under the wise guidance of Mother Carey, the children find fun and fulfillment in their new lives as they fix up the old house, make friends with their mysterious neighbors, and host the most memorable parties in Beulah—until the unexpected homecoming of their landlord’s son threatens to upend the Careys yet again!
